Through the joint efforts of LKF, Pengu Studios and PipeDream Production, a new house for storytellers and artists has been opened in Lund. Having a dedicated room for VR, Film & Visual Effects has sped up our workflow immensely.

Pengu Studios:

Build infrastructure & test solutions to be able to:

1) produce high quality short animated films through body and facial motion capture of real actors.

2) build animated short films inside a game engine, and then convert them to interactive Virtual Reality experiences.

3) produce world class, VFX heavy, live action fantasy films here in Lund.

PipeDream Production:

Build infrastructure & test solutions to be able to:

1) create and control dynamic, real time scenography for live theatre.

2) blur the border between live actors and projected environments & characters.

3) create and control, in real time, projected fantastical creatures through motion capture during a live performance.

What did we achieve?

-Merry Music Box - 5 New Short Films

-Merry Music Box - Jul 2015: 3 million views. Sep 2016: 18 million views.

-En Julsaga 2015 - A speaking house & Dancing ghosts using motion capture

-Pengu Studios - A dedicated space for VR, Film, Visual Effects and 3D Animation @ SuperNova

-Songs of Magic - A story told in VR, as a webseries & on stage. Project ongoing. Part of BoostHBG and Film I Skåne "Fonden" program.

Any kind of media that lacks a meaningful story is empty and pointless. To make content, we need to be able to tell great stories. Enter John Yorke and the 5 act structure. A few of us have now attended a 16 week online course with BBC writer producers John Yorke and David Roden. The course culminates in the crafting of an original treatment. In my case, this resulted in the creation of the web series Songs of Magic.

The majority of the remaining Framtidens Lund funds will be invested in film equipment. This will include a Camera as well as audio set-up to capture film quality sound for dialogue.

Currently we are working hard on making Songs of Magic into VR experience. This will be built inside the Unity game engine. The VR version can then, with just a few steps, be converted into an animatic (an animated draft version of a film) for the web series. We can also use the built environment as projected scenography for the stage version.

FINAL THOUGHTS

The infrastructure, mentioned in our project goals, is now almost in place. Our studio needs a few more final touches, mainly in the form of some more film equipment. Now it is time to kick off Phase II for reals. Now it is time to tell stories...
